The Gift of Community

Light the sparklers and slip into your sequins, we’re getting ready to say goodbye to 2017 and welcome in a new year. As I look back on this year, I can truly say that I’m grateful for each and every moment. No matter the challenge or the triumph, I’m learning and growing into the person that I was created to be.

I’ve learned a lot this year about the importance of community. We were created, each of us, for relationship. We humans cannot thrive alone, in isolation, on our own. In other words, we need each other.

In November of 2017, I started a Facebook Group called, Adoption Out Loud. I wanted to create a space where anyone who has been touched by adoption could come and share their stories and their experiences. I wanted to ensure that their voices could be heard and honored.

I’ve been amazed that how, in a few short weeks, this group has grown into a community of hundreds, with hearts open wide for each other. A group whose vulnerability and empathy is a life-changing gift for all involved, as members seek out support and guidance from one another. Adoption Out Loud is fast becoming a transformational look into the power of community and of togetherness: the gift of giving of ourselves freely, with no recompense.

I want more of that in 2018: this sharing of something bigger than ourselves. This gesture of service and outreach that expands our hearts, minds, and spirits. Fellowship is what we are created for. It’s within fellowship that we heal and learn the essence of what it means to be alive.

Do you feel alone, right now, as you face a new year? Has something or someone in your life caused you a pain that seems too deep to heal? I hope you will hear me when I say that community has taught me a life-changing lesson: we were not created to crumble, we were created to conquer.

That’s right, you were not created to crumble. You were created to conquer the pain, the challenge, the obstacle, and the disappointments of this life.

You have the ingredients within you, right now, that are needed to rise above. Don’t let the pain win; it only has lasting power if you give it that power.

As we enter a new year, I hope you’ll discover the healing power of community. I pray that you’ll seek out support from others who have walked a similar path that you are currently walking. Your story doesn’t belong in the shadows. Share your voice and you’ll begin to soar!

I live my life out loud, now; no more silence, no more solitude. I live connected, not segregated. And, I feel more free, more empowered, than I have ever felt in my life. How might living this way transform your life, and your relationships? It’s a quality question to ask yourself and reflect upon.

I’ll explore more of this kind of living as we move into 2018. I hope you’ll join me. We have so much living to do, together.

Onward to community!

Happy New Year,
