Lend A Hand: World Adoption Day

MMB_Blog_5_HappyNovember 9, 2014 will mark the first—ever—World Adoption Day. I’m excited and thrilled to have this day noted on my calendar.

I have said, many times over many years, that I long for a day when every child has a forever family and adoption is celebrated on every continent.

This November 9th we can begin to make this dream a reality by reaching out to the world, and up to the heavens, with a message of what adoption really means.

Adoption is the process of delivering a child from instability to stability.

Adoption is the purest example that family has little to do with biology and everything to do with love.

Adoption is not perfect, nothing and no one is. It can be messy and it can be hard, for both child and parent, but remember that family is worth fighting for—and the rewards are endless.

Adoption is joy and triumph.

Adoption is a gesture of open arms calling out that you are welcome here, no matter what you’ve been through before. It is a reminder that you are worthy of love and inclusion simply because you’re YOU.

Adoption is a gift of uncovering the treasures held within another human being—treasures that might have gone unseen by the world, if not for adoption.

Adoption is forgiveness.

Adoption is gratitude.

Adoption is mystery and history. It’s laughter and tears—discovery and recovery.

Adoption is understanding that you’ve been given this path because you are strong enough to walk down it.

Now, walk!

Stand tall and stay proud. You and I belong to a most resilient tribe—the adoption tribe. The world is only just beginning to see this tribe’s infinite value. Let’s lend our hand and expand awareness. Join me in honoring adoption.

On November 9th, draw a smiley face on the palm of your hand and raise it high as the world launches the first global adoption celebration. Take a photo and share on social media with the hashtag #WorldAdoptionDay. Share your photos with me on my Facebook and Twitter pages. Urge your friends and family members to do the same. I want to see you. The world wants to see you.

Let’s celebrate adoption. It’s time! 🙂
